Healthy Snacks To Help Curb Your Sweet Tooth

If Candyland were a real game, my life would be forever fulfilled. I would spend my days eating all the sweets and skip down the road with a lollipop in hand. Since I was a child, I have had an enormous sweet tooth that never seems to end. It doesn't help that this world is filled with sweet treats (cookies, skittles, and cake, oh my!). Unfortunately, most of these foods can cause cavities, diabetes, and unhealthy habits. Since I would like to live to old age, I try to pick healthy snacks whenever possible.

While I still prefer ice cream over fruit, I will say that there are healthy alternatives out there that help soothe your sweet tooth. If you are a sweet gal or pal, this is the guide for you. I'm a girl who loves snacking, so I try to keep as many on hand throughout the week. These options give me the best of both worlds. They are filled with nutrients, incredibly healthy for you, and taste amazing. After all, we all want our food to taste amazing otherwise, why would we eat it in the first place?

Trail Mix
You've seen this before, but it is worthy of the sweet tooth snack list. I've tried several trail mixes in my time, but I usually lean towards one filled with some type of dry fruit or dark chocolate mixed in with it. The great thing about most trail mixes is that you can get one loaded with different nutrients we need and it can actually fill you up. I try to avoid ones that have candy in them since that kind of defeats the purpose of eating healthy.

When looking for a good mix, I try to find ones that contain things like almonds, cashews, seeds, peanuts, dried fruits, and dark chocolate. This combination helps my sweet tooth craving while giving me vitamins and nutrients that I might not always get from other meals.

Granola
To say I love granola is an understatement. I usually always have an assortment of bars and granola pieces in my cupboards at all time. Right now, I've been head over heels for Nature Valley's Granola Crunch in the flavor maple brown sugar. You can get these at almost any grocery store and can eat it alone or add it to milk and yogurt. I love getting this alternative because it is several bars broken up into fun bite-size pieces for easy snacking. I love this so much that I keep a little container of it in my purse for quick snacking purposes.

When it comes to granola, you can't really go wrong. They have a variety of flavors out there for your enjoyment and are an excellent source of whole grains. If you aren't a big granola fan but love nutritious bars, I would also highly suggest Lara Bars. You can get these in a multitude of flavors (my favorite is their lemon bar), and it is loaded with nutrients. Lara bars are so delicious that you don't even realize you are eating something healthy.

Fruits
This is obvious for controlling your sweet tooth craving. I'm a big fan of apples, strawberries, grapes, and bananas. I try to make a little fruit mix each day as a snack before lunchtime while my boyfriend eats fruit for his morning breakfast. The great thing about fruit is the fact that it is always healthy for you and there are so many options out there.

Sometimes, I need a little extra with my fruit. To get a source of protein or dairy, I'll sometimes add peanut butter or yogurt for a boost of sweetness. You can add berries to your yogurt or dip that delicious apple in some peanut butter (or almond butter if you can't eat peanuts). This is also an excellent snack for people who don't have time to make something. I'm lazy when it comes to cooking, so anything I can readily pop in my mouth is always a plus.

Dark Chocolate
While this should be eaten in moderation, dark chocolate is incredibly healthy for you and gives me my chocolate fix for the day. It is loaded with antioxidants, filled with minerals, can improve brain function and even lower your risk for heart disease. If my trail mix doesn't contain any form of chocolate, I usually get a bar of dark chocolate and break it up in whatever trail mix I purchase.

If you aren't a huge fan of plain chocolate, you can usually find dark chocolate covered almonds, cranberries, and other healthy foods. This is one of the best healthy snacks I have found that completely rids my sweet tooth craving. While it might be all in my head, I also find this helps relieve some of my cramps during that time of the month.

Tea with honey
If I'm all out of snack items and in desperate need of something sweet, I'll make a cup of tea with honey in it. While it might not be a snack, it does help when I'm having specific cravings. Again, herbal tea has been known for the benefits they give and can be a delicious treat in the morning or before bed. My go-to tea right now is a dark chocolate black tea that I got from a local shop, but there are plenty of flavors out there for everyone.

I usually add a little honey to make it sweeter or, if I'm out of this, will put a small amount of creamer in for a boost of flavor. While you don't have to do this, it does improve that sweet factor.

Let me know in the comments below what sweet snacks you love to indulge in that are also healthy for you. I love finding new snacks and foods out there that don't taste healthy. By switching your junk foods out for these treats, you start creating habits that are good for the body, both physically and mentally. I'll leave a few options I discussed in this article below in case you want to try them out for yourself!
